Quick Answer

Planning an ATV tour in Eilat but confused by off-road terminology? This glossary explains every term — from ATV and RZR to Ranger and buggy — so you know exactly what to expect.

ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle)

1 ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle)

A four-wheeled off-road vehicle with handlebar steering and a straddle seating position, similar to a motorcycle. In Israel, ATVs seat up to 2 people with a total weight limit of 150 kg. Also commonly called a 'quad bike' or 'four-wheeler.'

RZR (Razor)

2 RZR (Razor)

A high-performance side-by-side buggy made by Polaris. RZRs feature a roll cage, bucket seats, and handlebar or steering wheel control. They are sportier and more powerful than standard buggies, designed for adrenaline seekers.

Ranger

3 Ranger

A utility side-by-side vehicle made by Polaris, designed for comfort and practicality. Rangers seat up to 4 people with no weight limit, use a steering wheel, and are the easiest off-road vehicle to drive — ideal for families.

Buggy

4 Buggy

A general term for a lightweight, open-frame off-road vehicle. In Eilat, 'buggy' usually refers to side-by-side vehicles like RZR or Ranger that have a roll cage and bench or bucket seating.

Side-by-Side (SxS)

5 Side-by-Side (SxS)

A category of off-road vehicles where the driver and passenger sit next to each other (side-by-side), as opposed to ATV where the passenger sits behind. Includes RZR, Ranger, and similar vehicles.

Quad Bike

6 Quad Bike

Another name for an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle). The term 'quad' refers to the four wheels. In Israel, quad bikes are the most popular off-road rental vehicle.

7 4x4 / Four-Wheel Drive

A vehicle that sends power to all four wheels, providing better traction on rough terrain. Most ATVs and side-by-sides are 4x4 by design.

8 Off-Road

Driving on unpaved terrain — dirt, sand, rocks, and gravel — rather than on roads. Off-road driving requires specialized vehicles and techniques.

9 Trail

A designated route through nature, often marked and maintained. The Nahal Shlomo trail in Eilat is the main off-road route used by U-Drive tours.

10 Desert Driving

Off-road driving specifically in desert environments. In Eilat, this means navigating through the Eilat Mountains, wadis (dry riverbeds), and rocky terrain.

11 Wadi

A dry riverbed or valley that may fill with water during rare rain events. Wadis are common features in the Eilat desert landscape and add variety to off-road trails.

12 Roll Cage

A protective metal frame surrounding the passenger compartment of a side-by-side vehicle. Designed to protect occupants in case of a rollover. Standard on RZR and Ranger.

13 Dune

A hill of sand formed by wind. While the Eilat Mountains are mostly rocky, some desert areas near Eilat have sand dunes suitable for off-road driving.

14 Snorkel

An raised air intake that allows a vehicle to drive through deeper water without flooding the engine. Not typically needed in Eilat's dry desert trails.

15 Ground Clearance

The distance between the lowest point of a vehicle and the ground. Higher ground clearance allows driving over larger obstacles without damage.

16 Torque

The rotational force of an engine, important for climbing hills and navigating steep terrain. ATVs and RZRs are designed with high torque for off-road performance.

17 Geology of Eilat

The Eilat Mountains contain some of the oldest exposed rock in Israel (over 1 billion years old), including granite, limestone, and sandstone. The colorful rock formations are a highlight of off-road tours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an ATV and a buggy?

An ATV (quad bike) is a straddle-type vehicle with handlebars, seating 1-2 people. A buggy (side-by-side) has a roll cage, bucket seats, and a steering wheel, seating 2-4 people. Buggies are generally more stable and easier to drive.

Do I need a special license to drive an ATV in Israel?

No special license is needed beyond a valid Category B (car) driver's license. Even new drivers with an accompanying driver status can drive an ATV.

What does RZR stand for?

RZR is a brand name from Polaris (pronounced 'Razor'). It refers to their line of sport side-by-side vehicles. In common usage, 'RZR' is often used as a generic term for sport buggies.

Is a Ranger the same as an ATV?

No. A Ranger is a side-by-side vehicle made by Polaris, with a steering wheel and bench seating for up to 4 people. An ATV has handlebars and a straddle seat. Rangers are easier to drive and don't require balance.

What is the best vehicle for beginners?

The Ranger is ideal for beginners — it has a steering wheel, no weight limit, and is the most stable and comfortable option. ATVs require some balance, and RZRs are more powerful and better suited for experienced drivers.
